Everything about Everything. The only question is... how much do you know?
Let's find out how much you know about Pickups.
What are the roots of pick up trucks?
The roots of the first pick up truck can be traced clear back to the turn of the 20th century. It was at that time that American farmers modified horseless carriages so that they could perform “heavy work”. The fact is, even when the Model T debuted in 1908 it was quickly chopped and a makeshift wooden cargo bed was added
Who made the very first pick-up trucks?
Ford. However as with any claim in the history of the automotive industry there is always an argument and counter claim. Having stated that here is what we believe (and we’re sticking to it!).
The first factory-produced pickup was a Ford Model T Runabout with a cargo bed in the rear. Although it debuted in April 1925, many Model Ts had already been converted by owners to make-shift pickup trucks by 1918.
Where did the name Pick-up truck originate?
Ford not only made the first pick-up trucks but after the trucks were manufactured, Ford shipped them to dealers in crates. The new owners had to go to the dealerships to "pick-up" the trucks, hence the name (which has stuck since that time)
What happened to the crates that the pick-up trucks were delivered to the dealerships in?
The new owners had to assemble them using the crates as the beds of the trucks… and that’s the entire story (we think)!
Who were the other players in the industry producing pick-up trucks?
While Ford had indeed pioneered the mass-produced pickup, Dodge was busy manufacturing an upscale version which happened to be substantially more durable (tougher) than the Ford version. Dodge’s pick-ups became popular in World War I as cargo trucks, ambulances and light repair trucks
In what year did Chevrolet become a player in the pick-up truck market?
In 1931 Chevrolet produced its first factory-assembled pickup
What is the most popular selling pick-up truck in the U.S.?
The Ford F-150 continues to be the best-selling vehicle in the United States. In fact it has been the top selling pick-up in America since 1982. However the Ford F-150 is a rare sight in Europe and in other countries, where high fuel prices and very narrow city roads make it difficult to justify to those consumers
What is a pick-up truck with four rear wheels referred to in the U.S.?
A dually
What is a coupe’ utility referred to in South Africa?
A "bakkie"
In the American domestic market, what are the 3 general categories of pick-ups?
1. Compact: introduced in the United States in the 1960s
2. Full-size (half ton)
3. Heavy duty
Note: The terms half-ton and three-quarter-ton are older terms which refer to the maximum cargo capacity by weight
Which category of pick-up is the best selling in the U.S.?
The full-sized (half-ton)
